I present to you the project that inspired Pinterest Fail for me! I knew I couldn’t be the only person investing time and money into things that look pretty or delicious on Pinterest, but somehow just don’t turn out right.
Original Inspiration: http://pinterest.com/pin/95208979591910971/
What I Did: I generally have the skills of a 7-year-old girl when painting my nails, but this effect seemed easy enough to achieve. I painted my nails gray first, two coats, and once that had dried I went to work with the sparkles. My thumb turned out okay, with a tiny bit of fading going down, but when I did my pointer finger the sparkles stopped short and looked like a strange attempt at a sparkly french tip. I countered this by dragging sparkles all the way down to the bottom. Same thing with my middle and pinky finger, although I gave the faded look another try on my ring finger as well. I looked down at the finished product and wished I had a pre-teen girl to blame for my mess!
My Result:

What Went Wrong: The glitter didn’t fade like the inspirations picture. And I think the gray color I bought was too dark, so instead of getting something light and sparkly, I ended up with something dark and clunky. If you’re going to try this I recommend a nice light gray and a glitter polish with really tiny glitter chunks as I think the bigger sparkles in mine contributed to the sad result.

I also failed with this pin. My sister’s nails came out great but she had to use real glitter and just sprinkle it on a little at a time.
3. March - 1:22 pmI actually think your nails look awesome! LOL. No fail to me. I love the idea of the glitter fading in and out in different ways on each nail. And the dark grey is a great color and very on trend. I’m a nail freak myself and am rocking a faded glitter look right now (I didn’t do it b/c I too paint my nails like a child, and I also bite them down to nothing ness so I require a gel protector over my nails).

Don’t give up! I love doing my nails and finding ideas on pinterest and this is actually one that does work. The base color doesn’t matter much, depends on how much contrast you want with the glitter, so a darker polish would make a silver glitter stand out more. Paint 2 coats of color and let dry. Then do one layer of glitter polish going about half way down your nail. Let dry. Do another coat of glitter polish over top of the first coat of glitter but don’t pain it down as far. Let dry. Do one last glitter coat on top of the two other coats, but only pain the tip. This establishes a glitter gradient. I also think that if you used a chunkier glitter, not one so fine, it creates more of the desired waterfall effect. A fine glitter creates more of a harsh line. Good luck
27. November - 1:04 pmI did this and I simply applied a lot more glitter polish at the top and then used a toothpick to sort of guide to cause the fade effect.
