Fail: Sharpie Mug

Posted under Fail

Name: arianne

Original Inspiration: http://pinterest.com/pin/7881368068515114/

What I Did: I followed the directions exactly – writing on the mug – making it pretty etc. Baked it for the full time – let it cool and then used it! Yeay! it was so pretty! Then I washed it and it looked like hell.

My Result:

Next Time I Will:  I guess gently hand wash your mug – needs a disclaimer – or maybe just use it for display purposes only.

I had the same problem with the same project I did. After a few hand washes the design started to come off. This project does need a disclaimer that it should be for display only.

However, they do make craft markers at Michael’s that work for this purpose. They are about $3 a pop, though…. it’s a fun group project with dollar store mugs.

Hand washing gently still rubs off. Touch the writing and it still rubs off. Very sad.

There is a glaze that you put on before you bake that seals it, you buy it at the craft store

Sharpie will never last permanently on a ceramics piece. Craft stores will have porcelain pens in multiple colors, which will be permanent on pre-glazed ceramic pieces. The pen will have instructions on how long to leave in the oven and at what temperature. I also saw this pin and knew sharpies wouldn’t get the job done.

I’ev been trying this all week with no success. Last night I baked the *f* outta my mugs. (45mins on 250C) I “think” it may have worked…although I may also tell the recipients its a pen pot not a mug just in case…

I’ve found this one suspect from day one. I’d rather just spring for the markers made specifically for this purpose. Seems like a safer bet.

I made gorgeous wine glasses last year similar to this idea. but instead I painted them with nail polish. My trial version was on a cheap dollar store glass, and the nail polish from a bunch of cheap different brands. Didnt bake or cure them in any way. The design has NEVER rubbed off, and it was painted on fairly thickly. and I always use that glass. (I made a set of two glasses for my friend with glasses made from half crystal)

I saw this pin and researched it and found that Sharpies will not work. So I bought those ceramic paint pens and decorated my mugs. I baked them exactly according to the directions on the pens. They looked GREAT! Until I washed them. This project is a fail no matter what!!!!

put over it clear nail polish and let it dry then it will stay on

There is one thing wrong. You didn’t use oil based sharpies! those are dishwasher safe. As stated, they are about $3-4 but they are a great investment

I made mustache mugs with my friends’ names on them for Christmas 2011 and they are STILL calling me to tell me how much they love their mugs! I run mine through the dishwasher and everything! The secret is to use the right equipment. Sadly, Sharpie is good at a lot of stuff, but no for writting on ceramic. For that you need to invest in a Vitrea 160 Ceramic Marker, which can be purchased at Walmart, Michaels, Hobby Lobby and Joann Fabrics.
