Fail: Naturally Curly Hair Method

Posted under Fail

Name: Danielle

My Blog: http://thegourmetaccountant.com/

Original Inspiration: http://pinterest.com/pin/38702878019301186/

What I Did: I did this EXACTLY like the pin. I pinned my hair up at night and it looked just like the pin, and in the morning it looked like this. INSANE!!

My Result:

Next Time I Will:  Maybe use larger chunks of hair? Either way I DON’T think this turns out pretty.

My hair is naturally curly so looks like that all the time on its own…lucky me!

Well, this probably depends on each person’s hair type, products used, etc. The main problem with this method is that the pins and ‘buns’ could come loose in the night and then you have some bits of hair that aren’t curly at all. My mom used to curl her hair this way all the time, albeit in smaller ‘buns’, because her hair was shorter, and it always turned out nicely. My hair probably wouldn’t work for this, even if it were short enough (it’s down past my rear), because my hair tends to be coarser, kind of dry, and has crazy body, so it would turn into a pseudo-afro. When I was a youngster, I used to put those little foam rollers in when my hair was damp, sleep on them, and remove them the next morning. Extreme curls! If I brushed it out, total crazy mop. I would think this wouldn’t work well with longer hair, even as long as the original pin, because who wants to sleep on all those big lumps?

Nope, that’s pretty spot on. Welcome to the world of natural curly hair! :)

That, and your hair is half her length. So I would assume that would affect the outcome somewhat. Curly hair is fickle. You really don’t want it. :)

Laughing so hard, I am crying. No offense, of course.

OMG! I tried this too and it was also a total disaster.

              1. Jennifer says:

that is about how naturally curly hair looks. Pain in the butt to deal with, huh? Maybe a little less jealous of the curly haired folk? Also, if your hair was longer it would turn out better. Short curly hair is hard to style, at least that is what I have found. The longer the better.

I have curly hair naturally and if i leave it be with out product this is exactly how it looks! My daughter too!!!

Oh, thank you for posting this. I am laughing so hard that I have tears rolling down my face. I have no idea whose hair this “trick” would actually work on — my fine, thin, stick-straight hair would look atrocious if I attempted this!!

                    1. Mish says:

I’ve done this for years but hair is finicky, some days it comes out gorgeous and other days my hair ends up in pigtails. :D I find that you have to pay VERY CLOSE ATTENTION to how your hair grows and how it falls, twisting and wrapping in the wrong direction (and not not all the way to the end) will leave you with a spazoid curl! :D

I have one of those today, so it’s a pigtails days. :D

I can barely stop laughing to type this comment. Sooooooooo funny! Thank you for making my night. :-)

I have crazy natural curls as well and, well that is kind of what you got. Natural curls do not usually have the nice neat symmetry that perms have.

Like Michele I just laughed so hard I started crying! I’m sorry this didn’t work out for you but your picture is hilarious, so that’s something anyway.

                            1. Veronica says:

Those are variation on pin curls and those can be very tricky. Whether you do pin curls or rag curls one thing that gets left out – end papers. You can get them at Sally’s for about $5 – $6.

                              Tips:

*Use end papers – If your hair is layered (mine is) then you may want to use two end papers to cover the layer when you roll/twist. Why end papers? It is the secret ingredient to keeping your curls smooth at the end instead of sticking out.

                              * Try during the day when you have no place to go (in the event it turns into a big fat mess!) and use large sections of hair, lightly mist with water only, and leave on for 2-3 hour increments – you can always add an hour or two at a time until you find the right time. Why? All hair is different. You need to find what works for you. Overnight may be way too long. I can rag roll my hair in the morning while I get my makeup on and get clothes ironed, etc. Within an hour, down it comes in long loose waves. It takes me about 15 minutes to rag roll it in long sections and I do not use water for a speed set like that. For longer lasting curls I can leave them in for about 6 hours or overnight. But I use larger bits of hair and the curls are short and bouncy until I brush them and shape them how I like.

                              * Never roll the front sections of your hair if you are a beginner. Leave that for the curling iron or flat iron because that is the part that frames your face and that is the part you will be the most frustrated with if it doesn’t work.

                              * Rag rolling will give you softer curls (if you use larger sections of hair) and works really well with ladies trouser socks (I cut the end off and they tie up well and are easy to sleep on). I recommend beginners start with rag rolling (I can give you good tips if you need) and then move on to pin curls.

                              Hope my suggestions will help!!

These are really helpful suggestions Veronia! I have never heard of end papers before. I’m excited to give them a try.

                                1. Reesey says:

Use the end paper technique, this is what hairdressers use with perm rods to get that nice, not crinkled up look at the ends. Also, use a flat iron to smooth out your crinkly ends. And practice this set alot more! You’ll get the hang of it after a few times.
