Fail: Bunny Rolls (Part 3)

Posted under FailWin

[Editor's Note: I'm labeling this is a FailWin. They don't look like she expected, but I think they are adorable!]

What I Did: I followed the recipe – pretty much to the dot! Spent half a day making the pineapple filling and the dough (I found the recipe with the picture on a facebook post).. For some reason the dough ended up quite crumbly and I couldn’t shape the bunnies… Though trust me – I TRIED! Feeling all disappointed with my efforts I looked at the original picture – and concluded that the bunnies on the left looked like they were made in a mold, not sculpted by hand…

My Result:

Next Time I Will: In spite of looking rather ugly, they tasted quite good :)

FailWin: Pumpkin Cinnamon Roll Pancakes

Posted under FailWin

[Editors Note: FailWin usually means "This probably isn't going to turn out like it did for the person who put it on Pinterest, but it's still worth trying it out for yourself!"]

What I Did: I LOVE pumpkin, cinnamon rolls and pancakes! Also I was having surgery and this was my choice for my ‘last meal’ before fasting. We followed the directions and when we added the swirls things just went downhill from there. The filling sort of went everywhere and then it was impossible to flip and it broke into a million pieces.

My Result:

Next Time I Will: We should have waited until the pancake was cooked a touch more before adding the filling and then waited even longer to flip it. You want it almost completely cooked before flipping. We did find that a ‘dot’ application worked better than the swirl application. They were amazing and delicious but the first ‘fail’ was too good not to share! Seriously yummy but I doubt we will ever be able to make them as ‘pretty’ as they are pictured.

FailWin: Cream Cheese Snickerdoodles

Posted under FailWin

Starting a blog means you get to make up the rules as you go along! So I’m adding a new category in, for what I’m calling a FailWin. This means that some aspect of the project were a fail, but the final project turned into something that would make you want to recommend it to other people.

Have you seen these? They’re made by Shelly of Cookies and Cups.

I don’t make cookies very often, but as soon as I saw these Cream Cheese Filled Snickerdoodles on my Pinterest screen I knew they were something I wanted to try very soon.

Where I thought they deserved a fail was in the process of making them. The dough was incredibly sticky, and difficult to mold into flat discs to put cream cheese on. You can see in all of these pictures that my fingers were covered in dough, and I was literally peeling the dough off of my palm.

This process was not only difficult and messy, I couldn’t be very precise and so I ended up making HUGE cookies. I would have preferred to make them a little bit smaller.

Messy fingers and a ball of dough that literally had to be peeled up from the silpat.

After a little bit of trial and error (we tried putting down powdered sugar, but the dough just absorbed it) I tried rolling each circle in the cinnamon+sugar mixture before I flattened it, and then did the same with the top round, and I was able to make it all work much better. Then I flattened one on top of the other, rolled it in cinnamon+sugar another time, and set them aside to freeze and reheat later (which worked great, btw).

In the end, everyone loved them, and it didn’t really matter how difficult the process was. We had been eating sweets for days, and my aunt still asked for the recipe she liked them so much!

The overall verdict is that this pin is a win, but try the cinnamon+sugar rolling trick to see if that helps you form discs the size you’re looking for.

I hope the posts you’ve seen so far have given you a better idea regarding what I’m looking for. If you have a project inspired by Pinterest that hasn’t worked out quite right, please see my submission form here!
