What I Did: I didn’t have self rising flour so I added a bit of baking soda and salt to my all purpose flour. Apparently I added too much!

My Result:

pinterest fail overflowing chocolate peanut butter mug cake

Next Time I Will:  Either use self rising flour or do the math and get the amount of baking soda right! Other than the mess, the cake that was left in the mug was quite good!

Fail: Rainbow Bundt Cake

Posted under Fail

Hello everyone! It’s me Jenna, the editor of Pinterest Fail. Things are getting back to normal for me, so I think regular posting should resume within the next week or so. Of course, that always depends on the submissions I’m getting from you! Thanks so much for sending them in.

After I had my baby I somehow managed to have a Pinterest Fail of my very own that I wanted to share with you.

I decided to make my son a cake from scratch for his third birthday celebration. I set out to make him a pound cake in a bundt pan, with the intention to recreate this. As I was mixing up the first cake I realized that only two adults would be consuming this cake, and making two pound cakes would not only be expensive but leave us with tons of leftovers! So I turned to Pinterest again and decided to try making a cake that was a rainbow inside. Should be easy enough, right?

My result:

As with most Pinterest fails, my problem is that I thought I knew enough to improvise. I wanted to leave part of the original white frosting color in part of the cake to have more variety, but I needed to add in way more colored frosting to see the rainbow effect! I actually did yellow, pink, blue, and green, but you can’t even see the green in the rainbow.

Now that I’ve written this post I need to stop staring at this picture. I have several slices sitting in my freezer right now and I’m salivating just thinking about a few bites. But I’ve got baby weight to lose!

Fail: Rainbow Cake In A Jar

Posted under Fail

Name: Robin

Original Inspiration: http://pinterest.com/pin/12947917648658398/

What I Did: I chose to make this cake for my roommate’s birthday. I wanted to surprise her when she returned from work. The jar cake became a volcano of cake batter! It was a pretty volcano, but not quite was I was going for.

My Result:

Next Time I Will: I would keep in mind that the cake will rise tremendously and follow the instructions on layer size!

Fail: Rainbow Cake

Posted under Fail

Name: Alicat8

Original Inspiration: http://offbeatfamilies.com/2011/06/rainbow-themed-baby-shower

What I Did: This was for my rainbow themed baby shower. I insisted on making my own cake, because I thought this was so cute. It seemed easy. Well I spent a few hours the night before baking all the cakes, then 15 minutes before the shower decided to start stacking them. I got to about the 3rd layer before they collapsed and fell into a mess. Luckily my husband ran out and bought a cake. This one ended up being served out of a huge bowl.

My Result:

Next Time I Will: Next time I would level off the layers. The rounded tops made the stacking impossible.

Fail: Ombre Cake

Posted under Fail

Name: Jenelle

Your Blog: http://bottsnet.blogspot.com/

Original Inspiration: http://pinterest.com/pin/164240717631378931/

What I Did: I wanted to make an ombre cake for my friend’s baby shower. It was supposed to be two shares of blue and a lime green. I was using my favorite chocolate cake recipe from Completely Delicious blog. But I changed the frosting to white chocolate to accommodate the colors. However, I don’t think that was the problem! What happened was a huge, blue-green, sloppy mess! I thought making an ombre cake was about technique and I carefully watched the video from Sweetapolita’s blog post. Hmmm… guess not! Cake was still delicious though!

Blog Post Detailing My Experience: http://bottsnet.blogspot.com/2012/07/i-tried-to-make-ombre-cake.html#

My Result:

Next Time I Will: I will use the frosting recipe from the original post… with all the correct ingredients

What I Did: I decided to try using Fondant and it turned into a Fon-DON’T!!  I think I’ll be leaving this cake to the pros.

My Result:

Next Time I Will: Leave it to the pros!  Fondant is hard to use!

Fail: Peanut Butter Cup Cake

Posted under Fail

Name: Summer

Original Inspiration: http://pinterest.com/pin/116038127868798029/

What I Did: I did not let the cake cool long enough before putting the filling on. It looked fine. I turned away for a minute and then looked back and the top piece of cake fell into four peices. I just put in the bowl and threw the icing on top.

My Result:

Next Time I Will: Wait a few more hours before putting the filling on.
