Fail: Chewy No-Bake Cookies & Cream Treats

Posted under Fail

What I Did: My oven was broken for a couple of weeks right over the Christmas holidays. I wanted to make a dessert for one of our family holiday celebrations but since I had no oven, I needed a no bake dessert. I stumbled across this one online that looked SO easy. It wasn’t until I was actually dumping the mixture into the pan that I realized…these are Rice Krispie treats just made with oreos instead of Rice Krispies. I don’t know why that didn’t occur to me when I read the recipe. This is also the instant I realized the tinfoil was going to be a nightmare. Why on EARTH lining the pan with tinfoil was part of the process is beyond me. The end result was a sticky, gooey mess that melded instantly to the tinfoil and was impossible to get off. Everytime I cut a square, the tinfoil came with it and I spent 5 minutes peeling off the tinfoil from the bottom piece by piece. I got nothing that looked like those perfectly shaped rectangular treats that are stacked up so nicely in the picture from pinterest.

My Result:

Next Time I Will: I definitely would NOT use tinfoil. I’d just spray the pan with baking spray before dumping the mix in…you know, like how you do with RICE KRISPIE TREATS!!! I also might consider not eating a handful of the oreos before starting. LOL! Maybe that upset the marshamallow/oreo balance which is what made them so gooey and sticky. This project cannot be saved. But I’m holding onto it for when I get my late evening snack cravings and I have no other food in the house to eat. Honestly? I’d rather just eat the oreos next time.

Fail: Rainbow Cake In A Jar

Posted under Fail

Name: Robin

Original Inspiration: http://pinterest.com/pin/12947917648658398/

What I Did: I chose to make this cake for my roommate’s birthday. I wanted to surprise her when she returned from work. The jar cake became a volcano of cake batter! It was a pretty volcano, but not quite was I was going for.

My Result:

Next Time I Will: I would keep in mind that the cake will rise tremendously and follow the instructions on layer size!

Fail: Dried Strawberries (Don’t Try This One!)

Posted under Fail

Name: Jana

Original Inspiration: http://www.theworldwidegourmet.com/recipes/dried-strawberries-ruscalleda/

What I Did: Dried strawberries in the oven. Simple yes? Not for me! Mine look nothing like the inspiration pic. Mine look like they need a shave! Instead they went file 13! In the trash! Thanks!

My Result:

Next Time I Will: Put them in a dehydrator next time! If it looks too easy, it probably is! Save time and money and skip it and go with what you know!

Fail: Oreo Balls

Posted under Fail

Original Inspiration: http://www.notsohomemade.com/2010/08/oreo-balls.html

What I Did: I wanted to make these for a Christmas family dinner. The stupid white chocolate just would NOT stay in a nice liquidy melted form! I tried adding a little milk to the white chocolate, but that didn’t help. I tried melting another batch of white chocolate and it worked for a few of them, but then it hardened just like the previous batch did, so I just gave up.

My Result:

Next Time I Will: My boyfriend’s mother suggested next time I try adding some oil to the white chocolate. I have no idea if that’ll work, but it’s worth a shot!

Original Inspiration: http://www.wikihow.com/Make-Homemade-Oreo-Cookies

What I Did: The way the blog was written it seemed like the directions stated that I needed to add 2 1/3 cups of oil, but it actually meant 2/3 cup oil

My Result:

Next Time I Will:  I remade the project that night, and they were fabulous and very savable once I knew it didn’t need quite that much oil! :)

Fail: Healthy Peanut Butter Cookies

Posted under Fail

Name: Denise

Original Inspiration: http://pinterest.com/pin/221520875393160425/

What I Did: These were supposed to be healthy peanut butter cookies with only four ingredients. Should have known from then. They turned out to be hot blobs of peanut butter with burnt edges. I guess in order to make a cookie, you’ll need a few more ingredients!

My Result:

What I Did: For Teacher Appreciation Week, my children’s school was doing a red carpet themed lunch for the teachers.  I thought for sure that I’d be the coolest parent there by making some Emmy-shaped cookies that I found on Pinterest.  They looked great going into the oven.  But by time I took them out, they turned into ghostly blobs.

My Result:

Next Time I Will: Next time I would follow the recipe exactly!  There is no saving these poor cookies, but my family still ate them and they didn’t taste as bad as they look.

Fail: Pinto Beans with Kale and Adobo Sauce

Posted under Fail

Original Inspiration: http://pinterest.com/pin/95208979592159425/

What I Did: Soaked, chopped, cooked, strained, cooled, blended, set aside, soaked, drained, pureed, chopped, cooked, simmered, and combined. All for a dinner that had to be eaten with generous helpings of feta and greek yogurt to be edible.

My Result:

What Went Wrong: This took me several hours to make, dirtied multiple pots, pans, utensils, and appliances, and really didn’t taste like anything special. Frankly it was pretty flat other than the adobo kick. I know I followed the recipe exactly (other than cutting back dramatically on the amount of adobo sauce I added in because I can’t imagine how my mouth would be on fire if I added the recommended amount), so I’m not sure what happened.
